Discontinued The LightWRITER SL40 CONNECT represents the outgoing model of this enduring format. Replaced by the new SL50 LightWRITER now available in Australia. The simplicity, forward-facing display for face-to-face communication and compactness are the essential features contributing to the success of the LightWRITER over decades. The SL40 CONNECT includes USB port for data fransfer and back-up. The notebook section offers data transfer to computer for editting, back-up, printing and from the LightWRITER a spoken note may be a speech, verbal report at a meeting, or other oratory.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Telstra is decommissioning the 2G network from December 1st 2016 - so the 2G WILL NOT WORK FROM THIS DATE.
the USB port of the SL40 CONNECT permits full use of the NOTEBOOK feature of the LightWRITER CONNECT. Documents written on the SL40 can be transferred to a Windows computer by USB stick, and opened as a .txt file for editing, printing and transferring back to the LightWRITER if required. Settings and dictionariescan also be backed up. This would be the main reason for choosing the CONNECT model.
The activity bar shown above provides quick navigation to the various operations of the SL40. If no activity is selected and the user starts typing, 'talk' mode will be automatically selected.
As text is typed, the second row displays predicted words. These are selected by choosing the corresponding number. Alternatively the words can be scrolled using 'next' and 'back' and selected using the 'do' key.
To select a stored phrase simply type a key word. In the example shown below the word 'my' is typed. All phrases including the word 'my' will be displayed.
The notebook section permits storing of large passages of text. Upon recall the pasaage can be reviewed by sentence or paragraph.

LightWRITERs are supplied with raised keys in QWERTY layout (unless ordered with ABCD layout). The keyboard layout can be changed and the physical configuration of the keys can be changed.
The SL40 LightWRITER is supplied with keyguards to make all the configurations shown here.
Raised keys are shown below.
Keys can be 'flush' with the surround, providing a minimal keyguard.
The deep keyguard shown below, can be useful for people who need to stabilise on the keyboard, or it can assist with isolating movements for accurate key selection.
The keyboard can be configured in the various layouts for left and right-handed use. See images.

Turning OFF Prediction Learning
If the LightWRITER user frequently misspells, types non-words, or makes typographical errors the prediction learning should be turned OFF to prevent operational over-load. The SL40 will be continually checking the dictionary to see if the 'non-word" is a new word, and this can cause "freezing" or :shut-down" if too frequent. Prediction can still be used, however new words should be added manually to the dictionary.
To turn OFF PREDICTION LEARNING:
First - place the SL40 into Advanced MODE (to turn ON Advanced Mode - Choose SETUPS (7), Information (8), Advanced Mode (2), DO, then arrow to turn ON, the Done.
Return to the ACTIVITY MENU by selecting the Exclamatin Point (!), then Setups (7), Word Stores and Language (4), DO, Predictions (3), DO, Prediction learning (2), DO, the arrow to choose OFF, then Done.
PICK to find a stored phrase using a KEY WORD
This instuction is incorrect in the manual.
Start with a CLEARED display, then choose PICK then type your word.
MANUAL TEXT (corrected): To see a complete phrase list, press the Pick key from a clear screen. To see a shorter phrase list, press Pick, then type in a key word or a few key letters from the phrase . Only phrases containing the text you have typed will then be shown. For example, pressing Pick BEFORE typing ‘drink’ or ‘dri’ will display ‘Please can I have a drink of’. To select a phrase scroll through the list using Next and Back and pressing Do to select, or use the appropriate number key. To return to typing without making a selection press Pick again
A Daessy LightWRITER SL40 adapter plate can be fitted to the base of the LightWRITER. Remove the mounting brackets and use the mount holes in the base of the LightWRITER to secure the plate with the spacers and screws supplied. This system requires the Daessy quick release base which remains on the wheelchair tubing, when the device is removed from the mount. The mount plate remains connected to the base of the LightWRITER when the unit is removed from the mount. Zyteq can supply the LightWRITER SL40 Daessy mount plate adapter. Zyteq can also supply the quick release base and other Daessy mount components as a "special order", which means that components would be ordered in for a specific order.
This is a simple mount consisting of the quick-release LightWRITER SL40 mount plate, a tube connector, a right-angled rod, and a wheelchair clamp. The wheelchair clamp can be attached to horizontal or vertical round or square tubing. If the tubing is less than 22 mm in diameter, two spacers can be inserted (jaw inserts) to suit. The wheelchair clamp fits round tubing in the range 16 to 22 mm diamater and square tubing in the range 15 - 22 mm diameter. The angle of the wheelchair clamp is sdjustable. For further information see the entry under 'mounting systems'.
