IntelliGaze IG-30
Not all eye-gaze systems are the same. This system is designed and manufactured in Germany. It is a sophisticated system with a high tracking rate and excellent working range. It can accommodate rapid or involuntary head movements. As a separate module it can be used with tablet computers or regular desktop monitors. Computers can be upgraded or changed and the Intelligaze simply transferred to the new system.
The Intelligaze IG-30 provides computer operation by eye-gaze. The system can also be connected to a portable tablet computer such as the Tellus 3, to provide eye-gaze access for communication.
Intelligaze uses the latest camera technology, very sophisticated image processing and calibration methods designed and manufactured by German engineering. It provides a reliable and functional eye gaze input, as it can tolerate natural and involuntary head movement.
A camera built into the Alea Intelligaze detects where your eyes are looking, so you can highlight something on the screen simply by looking at it. To select the item you are looking at, you can either blink or look at the object for a number of seconds or press a separate switch to select it. On the image shown, the camera module is located under the standard monitor. It is available in a black or white casing.

- The CAMERA | The Intelligaze system is supplied camera module that is fitted to an existing monitor or tablet PC. There is a one-time calibration procedure after which it allows gaze control of any Windows application by utilizing remote eye tracking. The IG-30 system hardware uses a modular approach enabling gaze interaction on most existing computers. The camera and illumination unit is fully self-contained, connecting to the host computer via a USB2 port.
Using the provided VESA-mount adapter, the camera and illumination unit can be attached to most TFT screens.
The separation of dedicated devices from the standard PC components ensures a longer product lifetime as consumer PC components are usually upgraded every 2-3 years driven by more demanding operating systems, such as the latest Windows operating system. The use of industrial grade camera components ensures the availability of stable drivers for current and future operating systems.
- The APPLICATION CENTRE | acts as a desktop for gaze-controlled applications. It allows the easy integration of 3rd party applications into the gaze controlled environment; however applications do not necessarily have to be gaze-aware. It is even possible to enter the Windows desktop and control standard applications. Through the Application Centre, the user's desktop can be pre-configured and the application's behavior can be adopted to the user's needs. It enables the operator to configure the gaze interaction parameters,i.e. which mouse data will be generated by the framework, whether to support a switching device etc.
After the easy configuration, the application will be available through a gaze activated start button on the Application Centre desktop.
The operator might restrict the access to a limited number of applications in order to limit the complexity of the gaze controlled scenario.
- CALIBRATION | The system needs to be calibrated to the individual subject once after system set-up. The quick interactive calibration is performed by following an animated dot with your eyes and fixating on several locations on the screen. A typical calibration takes less then 30 seconds.
The calibration routine can be adapted to individual requirements by selecting the number of fixation targets, manual or fully automatic operation, target size, etc.. The calibration can also take into account limited vision on a particular eye or strabism.
After the calibration, which already checks for valid data at each point, the user will receive a graphical feedback of the calibration results for both eyes. This allows even the untrained user to estimate the achieved accuracy and whether he should try the automatically-suggested improvement run.
- TRACKING STATUS | Because the system has no adjustable hardware parts, the positioning with respect to the user is the only remaining task before the first gaze calibration can be started.
An easy-to-understand tracking status indicator helps the operator set-up the system. Head-location as well as eye tracking status are accessible to the operator without the need to understand the internal processing at all, while showing enough information to sort out any issues that may arise.
- APPLICATIONS | Gaze control can be used to generate speech (text-to-speech), input text into other applications, or control pictorial communication systems (PCS). In order to provide the most efficient, field proven performance in many different application areas, the IG-30 system interfaces to a whole range of 3rd party software, such as The Grid 2 or Mind Express, as well as standard Windows applications. This system is used by people with Motor Neurone Disease, Cerebral Palsy, spinal injuries, Muscular Dystrophy and other conditions where eye-gaze is determined to be the preferred method of selection.
