Talara

As of 2017 the Talara has been DISCONTINUED due to low demand.  A few ex-loan devices may be available.  These would be available on a "sale or return" or hire basis only.  The Talara is a simple yet flexible speech generating device with easy set up. It has 45 minutes of recording time on four levels (pages). The key pattern can be set from 32 cells per page to 2 large cells. Access through direct selection or basic scanning techniques. The Talara uses four AA batteries, which are field replaceable. Overlays are held on with magnetic, hinged key surround for easy changing.

The Talara is easily customisable for both children and adults with wide ranging abilities and needs. It is similar in many respects to the popular ZYGO Macaw, however the Talara is simpler and some of the more sophisticated functions of the Macaw are not available in the Talara to make a more straight-forward device where you don't need to pay for features you won't be using.

The Talara has 2 modes:

  • PLAY | this mode is for the 'user'. The messages are selected and spoken when the 'user' selects a key either by pressing it directly, or by using a switch with scanning. The messages are usually represented with a paper overlay which may display pictures, photos, graphics or words.
  • RECORD | the mode is for the 'support' people who will be setting up the device for the 'user'. In this mode the support person can change the size of the keys and record the messages.

Some programming features are changed using external buttons on the side of the Talara (i.e. scan speed and scanning mode)

The main features of the Talara are:

  • the number and size of keys can be readily changed to suit people with varying visual, physical and cognitive abilities. Enlarged-Key Patterns 2 x 1, 4 x 1, 2 x 2, 4 x 2, 4 x 4.
Key patterns are shown in IMAGES tab.
  • there is just one model of the Talara providing all key patterns - with the opportunity to change key patterns according to development or changes of the user. All levels must have the same key-pattern.
  • the 45 minutes of available recording time can be used flexibly. There is no restriction of recording time per key - as there often is with other devices in this category.
  • it is very simple to set-up
  • rigid handle
  • internal microphone A 7.6 cm (3 in) internal speaker - permanent magnet type
  • a transparent hinged keypad cover to protect overlays
  • variety of mounting system options
  • the Talara has a nifty hinged overlay retainer. Overlays slip neatly between the lateral tracks and a magnetic closure secures the overlay retainer in place.
  • plenty of room for adapting to developing or changing skills.
  • is like having 6 models in one !
  • 'no dead spaces' on keyboard
  • power OFF without losing recordings
  • simply re-record to change messages
  • visual scanning modes for single switch access: manual linear / automatic linear / row-column scanning
  • ergonomic shape
