Phonics For All - Grid Set for Grid 3

A reading and spelling programme that can be used by all but will also support students who rely on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and those who have Complex Needs.

Marion Stanton has developed Phonics for All after trialling the idea over fifteen years with a number of students, many of whom have become literate. She has worked with Speech and Language therapists as well as teachers and families to ensure that the programme meets the literacy acquisition needs of the students. The Grid 3 was originally conceived as a program to support communication and computer access but recognition of its usefulness as a tool for learning is gaining ground. Some schools and local authorities are opting to use it as the front line curriculum tool for learners who have special needs and it has certainly proved to be a great platform for Phonics for All.

Simplicity is the key to Phonics for All. There are no cartoon characters and there is no forced choice. At first the teacher or instructor is expected to help the student to work through the activities. The student works through each activity and, once completed, the work is saved to a PDF that can be printed or emailed. This gives the teacher a piece of work that the student has completed, that they can mark. All of the student’s answers are recorded so that the teacher can analyse their learning support needs. Each Phonics for All grid set focuses on a phoneme (small unit of sound), a blend (two or three letters that together make a consonant blended sound) or an analogic phonic (unit of sound that is usually a rime). For those who wish to focus only on the sounds that are used in synthetic phonics it is possible to disregard blends and analogy but you are advised against this. Schools will still be running a synthetic phonics programme that your students can access and if you are a parent, the school your child attends will hopefully be doing so. This programme offers an adjunct to that programme which aims to meet the needs of the student who requires more practice and more time to absorb learning than the average student does. It supports the need for repetition and over-learning that is often recommended for students who have difficulties in learning. It also supports comprehension alongside the acquisition of phonic decoding skills.
