Talking Mats is a tool to facilitate expression of opinion, choices, ideas and preferences. If you believe that every individual has the right to communicate, then this is an invaluable tool towards achieving this. It works within a partnership structure where the "thinker" creates a "Talking Mat" around a topic, issue or question. The "listener" utilises specific strategies to provide a safe, non-judgemental context for the interaction. The "thinker" may be a person who verbalises and manipulates the symbol cards or the the "thinker" may have limited speech or a Complex Communication Need (CNN) and may indicate where to place the symbols cards. Talking Mats is an innovative and award-winning communication symbol-based tool under-pinned by extensive research and designed by Speech and Language Therapists in Scotland. It uses unique, specially designed picture communication symbols that are attractive to all ages and communication abilities and is used by clinical practitioners, carers and support workers in a wide range of health, social work, residential and education settings.

The Original Resources are the physical symbol cards, organised into topics and sets, used with your mat.
The Digital Resource is the App available through iTunes. Additional digital resources are available through the Talking Mats website.
These are topic sets which contain 3 (or in the case of Communication - 4) topics in the one pack. You receive all topics in the set and an A6 postcard for each topic, containing the thumbnail images.
Some sets have an additional booklet with suggestions and discussion about using the topic.

The Talking Mats Health and Well-being resource helps people with a communication difficulty to understand, think about and then express their views in a visual way using specially designed communication symbols. It takes a holistic view of the person by exploring a wide range of 13 topics on everyday life. It is based on the World Health Organisation ICF framework and makes it meaningful and accessible.

The Children and Young People’s resource helps children and young people to become more involved in the decisions that affect their lives. Listening and responding to their views helps interventions to become more targeted and effective. It gives a holistic picture of how a child or young person feels about their lives at home, at school and in the community. At each stage the following 3 areas are covered.
My Body and skills – how the child is growing and developing
What I do and my support – the child’s experience of activities and the support they receive
My Wider World – the child’s experience of the communities where they grow up
