AAC for everyone, everywhere
Every October, we join the global community in marking AAC Awareness Month – a chance to celebrate communication in all its forms.
AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) takes many shapes, from paper-based printables to advanced software, but at its heart, it’s about people. It’s about making sure every voice is heard, every story is shared, and everyone has a way to connect.
This month, we’re celebrating the unique ways AAC enriches lives, exploring why it matters in every space, and sharing reflections from our Clinical AAC Specialist, Becky, on the real, human side of communication.
October is AAC Awareness Month – a time to shine a spotlight on communication in all its forms. But instead of another list of top tips (as useful as those are!), I wanted to take a more human route this year. Because at its core, AAC isn’t just about charts, books, devices, or software. It’s about people. It’s about connection. And it’s about the messy, wonderful reality of everyday life that we experience, together.
AAC is for everyone
One of the biggest myths about AAC is that it’s only for a select few – people who don’t speak. But the truth is, AAC is for everyone.
It’s for the person just beginning their communication journey, using simple cause-and-effect tools or symbols to make choices.
It’s for the teenager navigating friendships, with quick access to phrases that support feelings and emotions.
It’s for the adult who lost speech after a stroke and is finding new ways to share their wit and wisdom. It’s for the person adapting to a progressive condition, where staying active in daily life remains vital.
And it’s not just for the person using AAC – it’s for the people around them too. Families. Friends. Teachers. Baristas. Bus drivers. Hairdressers. AAC works best when communities lean in with patience and curiosity, and when we remember that communication is always shared.
More than asking for a snack
At Smartbox, we often talk about Simple AAC – our framework that helps communication partners support AAC use in everyday life. One of the most important things it teaches is that AAC is about so much more than making requests.
Yes, choosing between toast or cereal matters. But communication is also about saying “I love you.” About disagreeing. About telling jokes, sharing stories, asking questions, or complaining about your day. Sometimes it’s even about using the less sanitised words to get your point across!
AAC lets people express personality, build or end relationships, take part in community life, and be heard – whether or not others agree. That kind of participation doesn’t happen in isolation; it happens through shared experience, responsibility, and joy.
Rethinking "independence"
In assistive technology, we often focus on independence. And independence does matter, but the truth is no one is fully independent – we all rely on others.
The most successful AAC users I know are surrounded by people who understand. Not just professionals, but peers, siblings, neighbours – even a patient taxi driver or waiter who knows to give wait time for a response.
Independence isn’t “doing it all alone.” It’s being able to participate fully, in your own way, in a world that’s ready to listen. That’s interdependence – and it’s something we can all strive for.
AAC belongs everywhere
Let’s take AAC beyond the therapy room, beyond the classroom, beyond the annual review. Let’s take it to football games, supermarkets, festivals, libraries, and beaches. Let’s normalise AAC in every part of life.
Because when we do, communication becomes everyone’s responsibility. And that creates something powerful: a world where no one is left out of the conversation. A world where every voice matters, in whatever form it takes.
Celebrate with us
This AAC Awareness Month, join us in celebrating all the ways AAC enriches lives. Share stories. Share smiles. Be curious. Be patient. Be present.
Most of all – be you. Because communication isn’t just about words. It’s about connection. And connection is something we all have a part in.
