Meet ElliseEllise’s story, two years on!

Back in 2023, Smartbox spoke to Ellise, a motivational speaker and AAC Ambassador using a Grid Pad with eye gaze. She shared how finding the right voice empowered her to speak proudly, pursue her dreams, and educate others on inclusion.

Smartbox recently caught up with her to hear how things have been going since they last connected. Here’s what she had to say.

It’s been a little while since we last caught up. What’s changed for you since then?

I am a non-verbal motivational/public speaker. I am a confident, passionate young woman who aims to educate people about disability and inclusion. I’m also an AAC Ambassador, EDI Ambassador at Ashton Park School, a Trustee at Teach Us Too, as well as the Disabilities Editor and a Patron for the Jill Dando News Centre, part of The Priory Learning Trust. My aim is to level the playing field and bring equality and inclusion in education, healthcare, and workplaces. My message is quite simply: “Ask, never assume.”

Are there any new goals you’ve set for yourself recently – personal or professional? How is your AAC supporting you in achieving them?

I’m passionate about spreading awareness in education and healthcare of cerebral palsy and promoting inclusion. Through my AAC device, I’ve been given a voice that allows me to share my lived experiences and support professionals. My eye gaze has been life changing. It hasn’t just given me a voice, it’s opened doors to opportunities I never thought possible. I can’t explain how much it’s changed my life. I’ll always be so grateful.

“To be recognised as a speaker is an incredible honour. Being able to share my voice, connect with others, and make a positive impact is something I never imagined, especially as a non-verbal communicator. Now I can educate, inspire, and empower others – that’s both humbling and surreal. The platform and network I’ve built have opened doors I never thought I’d walk through. Each opportunity, and every person who believes in me, is a reminder of how powerful resilience, community, and support can be. I’ll be forever grateful.”

Are you still using the Fast Talker grid set in Grid? Is there a feature or tool in Grid that you find particularly helpful or love?

I’m still using the Grid Pad 12 with Grid 3 software, which has allowed me to communicate more fully in everyday life and opened up a wide range of opportunities for my career. I’m a very intelligent young lady and I use the A to Z keyboard to type my messages.

The keyboard in Grid is an essential tool I rely on for daily communication. It helps me actively participate in conversations and engage more fully with those around me. I particularly value the Notes section in Grid – it allows me to create, store, and organise all kinds of speeches and written content.

What advice would you give to someone starting out with eye gaze today?

You are not alone on this journey. Many people around the world use eye gaze technology, and while every journey is different, you are part of a strong and supportive community. This tool has given you more than a way to communicate, it’s given you a voice. Your thoughts, feelings, and perspectives are important, and they deserve to be heard, respected, and celebrated. Never doubt the impact of sharing your words. You have the ability to express who you are.

Without my eye gaze, I wouldn’t have been able to do a documentary for Channel 4, be interviewed by West Country ITV and CBS News, or deliver a speech at the Houses of Parliament. My eye gaze has enabled me to do amazing things.

What do you wish more people understood about AAC and how you use yours?

Patience is so important when communicating with an AAC user. Formulating responses, whether through typing, selecting symbols, or navigating a device, can take longer than spoken conversation. Giving time for this process without interruption shows respect for our communication style and allows us to fully express our thoughts.

What are you most excited about right now? Do you have any new projects or events coming up?

I’m currently contributing to several media sector projects and also speaking at schools and conferences. These opportunities help me raise awareness, and my media work helps amplify that message to even wider audiences; all to inspire positive change.

If you could go back in time and give your younger self a message about AAC, what would it be?

Everything is going to be OK! Everyone faces obstacles and challenges, but we’ll get there. It takes time and patience, one step at a time. You’re not alone. So many people use AAC. Be proud to have your device and your voice.
