Modhose Loc-Line Mounts for Switches and Small Devices

The ModHose mounts offered by Zyteq are "off the shelf" Loc-Line mounts that are ready to use for mounting switches, iPads, and lightweight tablets to wheelchairs or furniture so that the item is positioned correctly for the individual who will be using it. They can also be modified to hold cups or other items in the position required. Component Kits are also offered so that the "off the shelf" mounts can be modified or divided into parts to form unique mounts.  

Loc line is an industrial material which is flexible, strong and durable.  The ball and socket construction permits the mounting to be repositioned simply by bending the hose.  Over time the hose may lose its rigidity and then it is possible to remove the limp section and replace it with a new section, if required.  Similar to Flexi mounts, which are a different brand.

As a mount for assistive technology it is probably best used as a temporary mount for assessment purposes or an interim mount while waiting for a more permanent mount.  It can also be very useful for people who change positions and may need the switch position to be frequently changed. With this in mind, we do know that some of these mounts are in ongoing use as the day-to-day mount for an individual.

Double Switch Mount Kit

Part code: 120292 (was MH90655)

This popular kit is suited to double head switch situations and the 152 cm (5ft) kit provides enough length to customize.
To attach this mount to a wheelchair, shape it into two uprights and a cross piece to form a U-shape.  The lengths are then cable-tied to the wheelchair frame.

ModHose Single Switch Holder - Spring Clamp 60cm [110241]

This is a unilateral mount that may be helpful solution for holding a switch or lightweight item on a tray or platform.
The mount connects to the wheelchair, pushchair or furniture using a spring clamp.

This is a unilateral mount that may be helpful solution for holding a switch or lightweight item on a tray or platform.
The super clamp provides a very sturdy anchor point for this mount.

Small Plate - Single Arm - Spring Clamp Mount - 30 cm or 60cm

Part code: 110321 and 110341

This is a unilateral mount that may be helpful solution for holding a lightweight item on the supplied plate, or using dual lock to adhere an additional plate.
This will not have the stability of the dual-arm and is suited to lightweight devices only. Supplied 300mm (1 foot) of loc-line,  with 2 x 2 inch strips of dual lock (2 sets)

Small Plate - Double Arm - Spring Clamp Mount

This is a bilateral mount that may provide a helpful solution for holding a lightweight item on the supplied 100mm x 150mm (4 x 6 inch) plate, or using dual lock to adhere an additional plate.
The two arms, 450mm (1.5 ft) per arm, provide additional stability for this mount.  Supplied with 2 x 50mm (2 inch) strips of dual lock (2 sets).

Tips and tricks

These systems are industrial components which have a wide range of uses.  Their use in Assistive Technology should be viewed in the context of the wider range of mounts offered in the field.  These mounts are quick to set-up and use; easy to change by hand.  These points may be positive or negative depending on the mounting situation.  Positioning of a switch to within a millimetre may be essential in some cases.  The positioning of these mounts relies on set-up by a knowledgeable person. 

Tips for Mounting to a Wheelchair?

Make sure you have a long enough length of Loc-Line for the mount. If required, more length it is easy to add more with the segments. If using cable ties, attaching the Loc-Line both vertically and horizontally every few centimetres as this will prevent swiveling. Make sure that you are not blocking any moveable parts of the chair. 

Using the ModHose kits for Switches?

Placement suggestions depending on the individual's abilities and preferences:

• Vertically aligned and positioned parallel to either side of the head
• Positioned for activation by a hand movement
• Vertically aligned and positioned parallel to knee
• At 90 degrees positioned directly in front of knee
• Angled and situated behind elbow
• be sure that thew switch is padded or soft enough not to cause the user any damage if hit accidentally.

Making it less flexible.

Linda Burkhart has extensive experience in using Loc-line mounts and adapting them.  She finds that filling a segment with hot glue and then inserting a length of solid wire or a length of pipe, then plugging the end, can help the Loc-line hold position. View Linda's instructions (PDF Download)
